Anti-Aging Products Advice
The fountain of youth. Isn't that what we are all looking for? If we can't be younger, at least we want to look younger. I
wish I could say I had the number one answer. But, if anyone did, they would be wealthy and on the evening news.
So, be very careful of the hype on some internet sites. They make amazing promises and may try to reel you in with "special
offers". For example, Dermitage offers a "free sample". All you have to pay is shipping costs - for which they want a credit
card. Then, if you miss the fine print, you may not realize that they will also start sending you a 30 day supply and billing
your credit card each month. Some of these products may be good but if they have to depend solely on this method to sell their
product, it must not be as good as they claim. I prefer products that can be ordered as you need them. So, therefore, I have
not tried or reviewed Dermitage.
The best advice for anti-aging is to avoid the sun - from birth on. Since that is impossible, then the next best thing is always, always wear a sunscreen. The next best advice is to never smoke or quit as soon as possible.
But if you are looking for the best anti-aging products, I think your best solution is a topical vitamin C product such as Cellex-C in the morning followed by sunscreen every single day, and a Tretinoin or Retinol product at night. Most - if not all of the effective Tretinoin products are available by prescription only. See the additional advantages for acne-prone skin.
Your skin has natural collagen and elastin which give your skin firmness and youthful glow. As you age, these don't work as
well and you have less oil production so your skin will appear drier and more wrinkled.
So what do we do to work against the normal aging process?
Exfoliation can help improve the appearance of the skin by removing old, dead skin cells. They make the skin brighter and smoother and can help minimize small imperfections caused by sun damage or acne. See the Exfoliators page for more information on this topic and with recommendations for topical products with exfoliating acid ingredients, chemical peel products, and microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion, used cautiously in conjunction with a product such as Retin A, can produce excellent results.
Retinol is contained in many anti-wrinkle and skin rejuvenation products. This is a form of vitamin A. Retinol, Retin A, tretinoin, and retinoic acid are often confused and are similar products. Retin A, Renova, and Avita are brand names of tretinoin or retinoic acid. So these three brands are basically the same thing and have a significant effect on skins cells to reduce the signs of aging. The acid nature of the tretinoin acts as an exfoliator and other properties product skin rejuvenation. Note that these products come in different strengths or concentrations of Retin A so you will have to experiment to see what your skin can tolerate. Retinol and retinoic acid are related but distinctly different. Retinol needs to be converted to retinoic acid to be effective but this conversion rate is
low and varies by person. Therefore, Retinol tends to not be as effective as Retin A. Some products have high concentration
of retinol and seem to be more effective.
Some of the best retinol products are:
RoC Retinol Deep Wrinkle Serum & Deep Wrinkle Night Cream
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream
Green Cream Retinol
Other products with good reviews that improve or reduce signs of aging:
Kinerase Cream - contains a plant growth factor called furfuryladenine which reduces roughness, blotchiness and fine wrinkles. This is the product that I use in combination with microdermabrasion and Retin A.
Cellex-C High Potency Serum - is a Vitamin C concentrate that makes the skin appear firmer and smoother with improved tone, color and texture.
Glyderm Hydrotone Max - gets good reviews but seems to be only a very strong moisturizer without any anti-aging ingredients. Moisturizers/hydrators lessen the appearance of fine wrinkles but do not make then go away.
Kiehl's Abyssine Cream - like the Glyderm product, this seems to be an excellent moisturizer without any anti-aging ingredients.
Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum - the amino-peptides in this product does seem to improve the appearance of skin in some people. Most said it makes their skin glow and reduces wrinkles. It didn't seem to work well for me so I will stick with the stronger Retin A and Kinerase.
Once again, products work differently on various skin types. People with sensitive skin often cannot use Retin A and have excellent results with Retinol products. So, I have tried to include a range of products for you to try in order to find out what works for you. Good luck!
