Choosing Your Makeup Base Foundation
In looking for the best foundation, we want one that goes on smooth and easy, is not chalky, covers our flaws and stays on all day. We want it to look natural and youthful and glowing. The first thing to do to achieve this is to take care of your skin as I have described in the Skincare section. Then your skin will be smooth and soft and ready for your perfect foundation. I have listed a few of my favorite makeup foundations below and ones that get generally good reviews from users.

My favorite "splurge" foundation is La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer - Foundation SPF 15. The silky texture glides over your face and provides very natural satiny coverage. The flip top has a concealer than can be used to cover flaws and dark circles. And the makeup has a built in SPF 15 sunscreen. This is a favorite foundation but not a favorite concealer. The concealer is much lighter than the foundation which makes it harder to blend. And a very little bit goes a long way! So be careful if you use it.

Even though this foundation is expensive, you don't need to use much to get good coverage so it lasts a long time. The built-in wand makes it easier to apply the little dabs of makeup on cheeks, chin and forehead to get the right amount in the right place.

The "best buy" foundation I recommend is Cover Girl's Simply Ageless Foundation. Make sure to apply moisturizer, sunscreen prior to foundation or it can appear chalky.

Which gets me to sunscreen in foundation. It's a good idea to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. So, the La Prairie Foundation technically does provide good SPF protection. But, unless you lather on the makeup extra thick you may not get the protection you need. Therefore, I recommend using a sunscreen or moisturizer with a high SPF rating in addition to the SPF protection provided by the foundation.

Other things to keep in mind when choosing foundation is your skin type. If you have oily and/or acne prone skin, you should avoid oil-based makeup. To avoid a chalky look, use a good non-comedogenic moisturizer or face cream.

A popular foundation for sensitive skin is Clinique Perfectly Real Makeup. All Clinique products are allergy tested and 100% fragrance free. This foundation uses micro-mirrored pigment technology to optically resurface the look of your skin. A must for sensitive and mature skin.
