Lip Liners - Reviews and Application Tips
Lip liners are often used as a base for lip gloss, to increase size of lips, or to even out lips that are not perfectly shaped. But don't let it remind you of your grandmother drawing her lips on. A properly used lip liner will improve the size and shape of the lips, prevent bleeding of lipsticks, and provide color that lasts all day.

Some things to think about when applying lip liner:

The lip liner should not be darker than the lipstick or gloss that you use. If liner is used with lipstick, it should match the lipstick as closely as possible.

A lip liner that is a light skin tone color used just outside the lip makes the lip look bigger and keeps lipstick from bleeding.

Matte shades make lips look thinner -- which is why I love lip liners and gloss.

For lasting color, pencil all over lips with a soft lip pencil. Apply lipstick over and blot.

To make lips look fuller, line lips with a pencil and then blend the edges with a sponge applicator. Cover edges with gloss or Vaseline.

Apply foundation around the lips give a precise look without lip liner.

Draw slightly beyond the lip with a neutral-colored lip pencil. Then apply lipstick. Your lipstick will attach to the liner for a fuller-lipped look.

In searching for just the right lip liner, we generally want a combination of things that are almost impossible to achieve. A lot of lip liners are too dry and hard. But it's hard to get a soft pencil that lasts or is waterproof. We want a soft pencil that is nourishing to the lips, waterproof and/or long lasting in great colors. Some of the best that I have found and get high marks from users are:

MAC Spice Lip Liner Pencil is the softest lip liner ever. Spice is a good color for most people but may be too brown for some. The MAC pencils come in lots of other great colors.

Dior Rouge Contour Lip Liner has a good quality brush built-in. It is more expensive than a lot of lip liners but it lasts a long time.

Givenchy Lip Liner is waterproof but not drying and is enriched with vitamin E. It is long-lasting and has a selection of good colors.

Cargo Reverse Lipliner in nude will create full pouty lips and prevent feathering. It is great to use under a sheer lip gloss to provide structure and shape and helps lipsticks or gloss last longer.

Becca Cosmetic Nude Lip Liner is ultra soft. It both plumps and defines. The liner come in two tones: light skin tone on one end and neutral lip color on the other.

Mary Kay Lip Liner is easy to use and has good color options.

Other favorites include:

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Liner - love the names of the colors!
Trucco Pro Lip Pencil - makeup pros seem to love it
Smashbox Lip Pencil - nice sheer shades
Benefit Silk Lip Pencil - good value
