Why Lipstick and How to Find the Best

Lipstick was invented in antiquity when semi-precious coffee beans were crushed and applied to the lips and occasionally around the eyes¹. Cleopatra had her lipstick made from crushed carmine beetles, which gave a deep red pigment, and ants for a base. Lipsticks with shimmering effects were initially made using a substance found in fish scales called pearlescence². These were the original organic lipsticks!

Women have wanted to enhance their lips and make them look sexier as far back as, well, antiquity.

Lips that are soft and kissable, beautiful color that lasts all day and doesn't come off on your wine glass -- that is what we are looking for.

Most lipsticks wear off too fast. If it doesn't, it is too drying to your lips. In my search for the perfect lipstick, here are a few of my favorites:

Dior Addict Lipstick has a multi-color effect and is super shiny, lightweight and smooth.

Guerlain Kiss Kiss has sparkle and plumps the lips. I love the name!

Lancome Color Design Sensational Effects Lipcolor Smooth Hold is a gloss/lipstick combo that has the creamy feel of lipstick and the shine of gloss.

Chanel Aqualumiere Sheer Color Lipshine SPF 15 has sunscreen for the lips! This lipstick is super moisturizing, ultra creamy and the semi-sheer is great and looks natural.

Color Intrigue Effects Lipstick by Elizabeth Arden is long lasting with moisturizing Vitamin A and E.

Clinique Superlast Cream Lipstick is not really that creamy. It dries to a matte but is not too dry.

Max Factor Max Wear lip colors has a two-step process (1) apply almost a permanent color that dries very quickly then (2) a gloss over that.

Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick is creamy, long-lasting and has a good selection of colors.

And, as always, there are the Nars and MAC fans. I like some of the Nars and MAC products like the eyeshadows but in my opinion, the other lipsticks listed above beat these brands out.
